In this cyber-awesome video, we'll go through the most secure way of updating or upgrading your Kali Linux machine or any other Linux distro without the hassle of downloading new ISOs and without worries of losing your files. This method works for both virtualized and non-virtualized setups.
I upgraded from a 2021 to 2023 rolling release so follow carefully for a smooth process. You should of course expect some errors if you're rolling from a way older version like me. And don't worry the end of the video has some errors or issues you might experience "Sub-process error" inclusive and the solutions for it will be provided right here as you scroll through and in the video.

⫸🚨SUB-PROCESS ERROR SOLUTION
First you need to identify the exact package name with .deb causing the error. Mine was plocate-modern version of the locate tool. Then run the commands below and repeat the update command after autoremove and the fix broken command at each step as you try installing the package by just its name. If all fails, that's when you can move to the overwriting command as a last resort. First update and install the package, then continue with the full-upgrade command. Use the video as reference.
- sudo apt clean
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt --fix-broken install or sudo apt install -f
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives [PLACE PKG NAME HERE]
-sudo apt install [PKG]
