The demographics in manga can be confusing for those of us not living in Japan. Especially when it comes to shoujo which most people will deem as any series with romance or a female main character. But what is shoujo exactly? And can we decipher what they look like?

As stated in the video, the history of shoujo manga is hard to pin down which is why I tried to only give the two common perspectives of researchers that I read from. The history of manga in general can be confusing since much of the manga in those times is lost considering they did not all get published in tankoban format. See this article on the history of shoujo/Margaret magazine.

Plus shoujo manga was not heavily researched until critics found it "worthy" in the 70s when the Year 24 Group came around.
Tezuka is usually attributed to the shift in narrative story shoujo. There are other examples of shoujo before his time such as shoujo shosetsu or the manga Nazo no Clover by Katsuji Matsumoto which was published in the 30s. This comes from this article.

Hideko Mizuno is more attributed to her most popular work 'Fire!' and 'Shiroi Troika'. However in this article they attribute her to having been one of the first shoujo mangaka to make a romance series. So while it may not be romcom like I said in this video, it is most likely still romance.

In the first paper I posted in the edits section, they attribute the popularity of high school romances to Nishitani Yoshiko.
You can find additional information about the early days of shoujo through this article, although it is in Japanese. I used Deep-L to sift through it.
