An equation is said to be exact if it can be written in the form M(x y)dx + N(x y)dy = 0 where M(x y) and N(x y) are functions of x and y. To verify that the equation is exact you need to check that the partial derivative of M with respect to y is equal to the partial derivative of N with respect to x. That is
∂M/∂y = ∂N/∂x
If this condition is satisfied, then the equation is exact.
