Umbrellas are an essential tool for portrait photographers for three reasons. They're cheap, they're easy to store and they can be used as an emergency umbrella when it rains on set! But's they're abilities to modify light that I'm mostly interested in and with that in mind umbrellas fall into two groups.

Reflective umbrellas bounce light onto your subject. Shoot through umbrellas diffuse the light before it reaches your subject. Both types of umbrella make the light from a flash larger and the shadows softer but is one or the other better? Let's find out together with a little help from my model "Polly".
