Fredriksten fortress was built during the end of the 1600s as a respons against the many wars between Sweden and Denmark-Norway, during 200 years Sweden invaded and attacked this fortress a number of times. The Swedish King Carl XII died here in 1718, when he was inspecting the trenches during the Swedish siege of Fredriksten during the Great Northern War 1700-1721.
