Othercide, a game I've enjoyed much more than any I've played in a while. I love turn based strategy, and this is the closest I've ever seen a game come to Jeanne D'arc, one of my favorite games of all time. But this one was so pretty and the story so interesting, I think it tops it despite it's short play time. I thoroughly enjoyed unlocking the memories in order to read all of the lore, and piecing together the literature shared in loading screens, learning more about the significance of everything as you learned more about Lily's life through not only the chapters unlocked through memories, but descriptions of items in remembrances. The broken sword of her master, described as being cut cleanly, signifying the killing blow Lily struck against her gives me chills. Also probably wigged out when I got the final remembrance where she tells you her name, all but explicitly stating you were Memory this whole time. Anyway, my voice is stupid, so I wanted to put the script here, but it doesn't fit in the description (did you know youtube descriptions had limits word count limits?). Anyway, in quick summation...summary? Whatever.
Lily is a chosen one who defends the world from nightmare creations and others trying to break through the veil. She does this shit for like 500 years, before the Child is born and linked to suffering. The child was the perfect host for suffering, since as an immortal infected with an incurable illness, he was tortured and experimented on relentlessly, building up the strength of suffering.
Lily learns of this, guided by curiosity whenever significant events required her intervention, and goes to free the child of his link to suffering, aware of how powerful the other was. She arrived just in time for the child to release his power and destroy the city in the process, but because she had set her own other loose into the world, she was in a weird state, chosen one without an other, and so her spirit lived on, perhaps now as an other herself, and she became the red mother while memory left unreality and entered reality to combat suffering and the child.
Suffering begins as a nucleus, slowly being born, feeding on the worlds suffering, the deaths of daughters and the child's army. But perhaps Memory is a nucleus as well, slowly gaining power through the game as memories are unlocked, used to strengthen your daughters. You and suffering are in the same situation. Locked in the dark corner created by the child, having been brought forth into reality by your linked chosen one, and strengthened by them. And that's the game. You, playing as memory, fighting against the child and suffering with the help of Red Mother in order to protect the veil which suffering threatens by breaking through. Even if he merely wishes to exist...pretty messed up.
Other than that though, it's just a quick retelling of Lily's life story, which serves to chronicle her journey protecting the veil and learning all the techniques your daughters are able to use throughout the game. But it doesn't do it justice, you have to go back and read all of Lily's story for yourself, it's honestly my favorite document in any video game. The lore for this game is perfectly told and revealed as you play. I don't know if the ending implies a sequel, with Fear threatening to break through the veil now, but I would certainly love an opportunity to play as The Mother herself if it does. Protecting the child as an ally in the fifth and final week of the game before confronting suffering felt nice, and I'd love to see the child and mother united with memory against a new foe. Perhaps able to control the child's creations as well as the daughters.
Plus Lily's character design is just cool as fuck. Give me a prequel hack and slash game hahaha. The soundtrack is awesome, Olivia Mace absolutely killed it as the voice of The Mother, the gameplay is fun, the story unique, the designs incredible, the atmosphere badass and I want more. Alright, I'm done. Othercide is awesome.
