During the COVID-19 pandemic, journalists worldwide suddenly found themselves on the health beat, trying to make sense of competing claims, varied specialists, and a science that seems to change by the day. This session takes you from COVID-19 to drug development and approval, evaluating scientific studies, understanding conflicts of interest, and exposing fraud and malpractice. Rivera and Tinari are authors of the GIJN guide Investigating Health and Medicine, available in seven languages. (Note: GIJC21 has two sessions on health and medicine, one on Tues. timed for the Americas and Europe/Africa/Middle East and one on Thurs. for Asia/Pacific.)
Every two years since 2001, the world’s investigative journalism community has joined together in a different city, and the results have been extraordinary. The GIJCs are giant training conferences, with practical panels and workshops on the latest investigative techniques, data analysis, cross-border collaboration, networking, and more by the best journalists in the field. Our conferences have trained over 8,000 journalists and helped lead to the founding of investigative teams, nonprofit newsrooms, and headline-making stories around the world. The Global Investigative Journalism Network is an international association of journalism organizations that support the training and sharing of information among investigative and data journalists—with special attention to those from repressive regimes and marginalized communities.

Providing resources and networking services to investigative journalists worldwide;
Publishing in multiple languages and on multiple platforms the latest tools, techniques and opportunities for those in the field;
Helping organize and promote regional and international training conferences and workshops;
Assisting in the formation and sustainability of journalism organizations involved in investigative reporting and data journalism around the world;
Supporting and promoting best practices in investigative and data journalism;
Supporting and promoting efforts to ensure free access to public documents and data worldwide.
