Given their popularity, understanding how to use OptiFine with Forge on a Mac, specifically for Minecraft 1.20.1, can be huge for improving FPS while playing with mods on Minecraft 1.20.1.
Step 1: Download OptiFine
Before anything else, you will need to download OptiFine for Minecraft 1.20.1 on your Mac. To do this, head to the download link in the description. You can find all of the OptiFine files on OptiFine.net. From here, head over to the Downloads page in the menu bar. On that page, click “Mirror” next to the version that you want to download.
At this point, you should also identify the “Forge” version marked next to the version you want to download. This can come in helpful later if things don’t work properly the first time.
Step 2: Download Forge Stable Release
Once you have OptiFine downloaded on your computer, you’ll now need to download Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 on your Mac. Head to the link provided above, and you’ll then be able to download the version for Forge 1.20.1 Stable Release on the right side of the page. This is the version you want if you are trying to play the latest version for Minecraft compatible with Forge for Mac.
You can also click “Show All Versions” under the “All Versions” section. Your goal here would be to match the Forge version number that OptiFine displayed earlier. Once you find it, click the “Installer” next to the version.
You’ll then be redirected to AdFocus. Wait 10 seconds, and don’t click anything else on this page except for the red “Skip Ad” button that appears in the top right corner of the page. Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 for macOS will then begin downloading.
Step 3: Installing Forge on macOS
Now that you’ve downloaded Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, you’ll need to install it on your computer. To do this, open your Downloads folder on your Mac and drag the Forge and OptiFine jar files to your desktop. Now, right click on the Forge Installer jar file, and hit Open with Java Launcher. If you do not see Java launcher, that means you do not have Java 17 installed on your Mac.
To install Java 17 on your Mac, head to the link in the description above. You’ll be taken to the Java launcher download page where you can download the latest version of Java 17 for macOS.
Once you have done that, you should now be able to continue with the installation process of adding Forge and Optifine together on a Mac. Go through the Forge Installation process, and once it is done, open the Minecraft launcher on your Mac.
Step 4: Combine Forge & OptiFine for Mac
Open Minecraft using the Forge profile. Navigate to “Mods” from the main menu. Subsequently, click on the “Mods Folder” option. Now, simply drag and drop the previously downloaded OptiFine file into this folder. Close the folder and Minecraft afterwards.
Upon reopening Minecraft using the Forge profile, OptiFine is active. While it won’t appear in the Forge Mod Menu, its presence is unmistakable. Navigate to Options -- Video Settings. Voila, OptiFine 1.20.1 features, including shaders, will be visible, signifying you’ve mastered how to use OptiFine with Forge on a Mac for Minecraft 1.20.1.
