Here are the design considerations when doing ultra low power LCD clock that draws under 2 microamps from a battery, so two AAs will last over 100 years... except they'd have already self discharged and leaked all over the place!
It's based on a Microchip PIC24, but the design considerations apply to all ultra low power designs, where you're trying to do the most on flea power.
