In total, there are about 800 mud volcanoes in the world, and 350 of them are located in Azerbaijan. Moreover, some of these volcanoes are quite large and dangerous - eruptions are accompanied by explosions of gas condensate and sometimes even significant ignitions (up to 1 km in height), because they are, as a rule, located directly above oil and gas fields. On the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, from 1810 to the present, approximately 200 major eruptions have occurred out of 50 volcanoes.
The most famous and visited mud volcanoes are located near the city of Gobustan
NASA geologists who studied the nature of Mars concluded that the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are similar in structure to the hills of the red planet. On September 15, 2004, the largest mud volcano in the world, located on the territory of Azerbaijan, was included in the Guinness Book of Records.
