Three nearly years since it was first announced, early next month (4 March) Robert Pattinson is finally set to appear on our movie screens at The Batman, the latest cinematic take on the caped crusader. While comic book studio DC has had a mixed success bringing its “DCEU” slate of superheroes to the screen, the non-DCEU movies, such as 2109’s The Joker have enjoyed greater critical and public response. Against set outside the DCEU, Matt Reeves's vision of the dark knight is looking to be one of the biggest movies of the year with healthy ticket pre-sales. But if you haven’t already reserved your seat, where should you book to see it? As a “tent-pole” movie, a high-quality movie theatre would seem like a must. So, IMAX as normal, right? Well, it’s not that simple. First, the film has been shot using digital cameras rather than IMAX film cameras. On the other hand, the camera in question – the Arri Alexa LF (large format), is “Filmed For IMAX” certified, which was used on films such as Dune, which features extended sequences in full IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratio. On top of that, director Matt Reeves tweeted out that he’d finished quality control checking his movie in IMAX writing that it: “Looked and sounded so incredible. What a beautiful, immersive format.”So, definitely IMAX then. Well… an important thing is that the film was shot using anamorphic lenses, which precludes IMAX framing. As such, The Batman will not feature an IMAX expanded aspect ratio and the whole movie will be projected at a standard 2.39:1 aspect ratio. What’s more, on the same day, Reeves also tweeted that he had, “finally qc’d the movie in stunning #DolbyVision with absolutely astonishing #DolbyAtmos sound. Thank you, @Dolby, for blowing my mind!”Cinematic format hedge betting at its finest. Of course, it makes perfect sense that Reeves would get excited about quality controlling his movie in the two premium digital film formats available today. As incredible as IMAX is, in absolute picture quality terms, the dynamic range and colors on show in a Dolby Cinema system even outdoes IMAX – and without the benefit of the expanded aspect ratio it does give Dolby Cinema the leg up as the ultimate format to see this movie in. And there’s more to it than the quality hitting your eyes – you have to think about what's underneath your posterior too. While IMAX seats are always comfortable, the amount of legroom does vary – and sometimes is somewhat lacking (Cineworld Leicester Square, I’m looking at you) – and with a potentially bottom-numbing run time of 2 hours 55 minutes, you have to think about both your eyes and rear. Here again, thanks to its luxurious seats, Dolby Cinema wins out. However, at least here in the UK, Dolby Cinemas are sadly few and far between (there are two in Leicester Square, London) and Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham have one each. This means that you are more likely to have an IMAX screen near you.
