"A lot of people can't get it right on the first try," says Kevin, a patient in recovery at the Center for Opioid Recovery and Engagement (CORE) at Penn Medicine.
Our CORE program provides comprehensive peer support for individuals struggling with opioid use, and support for their loved ones.
"There's trauma, there's mental health, there's family dynamics..." explains Nicole McDonnell, Certified Recovery Specialist at CORE. "We have to be prepared for all of it, and that's where harm reduction comes in."
The CORE program connects patients with a certified recovery specialist to support them over the long-term, and to create a plan that meets their needs. We support all paths to recovery, including the use of medication assisted treatment.
"We try to take a non-judgemental approach," says Margaret Lowenstein, MD, MPhil – Fellow, National Clinician Scholars Program, Attending Physician, Department of Medicine. "It also means trying to meet people's health needs, whether they're ready to fully engage in treatment or still thinking about it."
CORE is a Pennsylvania Department of Human Services designated Center of Excellence. CORE services are free for all patients, regardless of insurance.
