The Spanish Quarters are among the most characteristic areas of the beating heart of Naples. For centuries they have been adjacent to the always lively and crowded Via Toledo, which forms the boundary between two spaces of the city with completely different buildings and histories. The Spanish Quarters are a complex square network of streets, a little dark given the proximity and size of the buildings, which is like a city within a city. The districts have hardly changed over time. Naples owes the appearance of the quarters to the arrival of Don Pedro of Toledo in 1532, who was a loyal adviser to King Charles V. Don Pedro designed an area very different from the rest of the city in shape, to accommodate the soldiers and officers of the Spanish army. The six streets of the Spanish Quarter run parallel to Via Toledo and much more perpendicular to it. These streets were built in 1536, a few years after the viceroy settled in Naples. The Spanish Quarters are one of the areas with the least greenery in the city, a record that has sadly held for centuries. The numerous buildings that make up its structure, including houses and churches, grew and eventually reached the foot of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which overlooks Naples from above, near the Vomero Hill. Today, the Spanish Quarters are a place full of life, a bit mysterious to tourists who stroll leisurely through the labyrinth of streets. The Spanish Quarters, located in the heart of the city, are made up of the San Ferdinando, Advocate and Montecalvario quarters.
To this day, the quarters retain their cultural characteristics or Neapolitan customs. The most striking examples are the habit of women drying their laundry on lines that cross the paths longitudinally, or the presence of small artisan workshops that make belts, bags and shoes, all made entirely by hand, and that still preserve ancient traditions.
