In this video, I use a range of media studies theorists to investigate why there is so much hate online now. We look at Stuart Hall's reception theory, uses and gratification theory, Steve Neale's genre theory, Shirky's End of Audience theory, and bell hooks feminist theory. I use these to build the argument that audiences have become entitled and speak out when their expectations aren't met, and this has resulted in toxic hate online. One of the main texts I look at is Ghostbusters and Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi anti-racist comments that have been directed towards Reva played by Moses Ingram.
