Between 1956 and 1967, Nasser embodied the Arab dream. He was the spokesperson for the aspirations of peoples emerging from the colonial era.

During the Suez crisis in 1956, he transformed a military defeat into a political victory. A challenge to the British and French colonial powers which made him an undisputed leader. He then embarked on adventures that ended badly: the union with Syria, nationalizations, the war in Yemen, until the humiliating defeat of 1967 against Israel during the six-day war.

Nevertheless, he remains in the eyes of the Arab peoples the hero who defied the West, and in the eyes of the world the champion of Arab nationalism which was, for a time, the bulwark against Islamism.
