After falling in love with Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck), wealthy Charles Poncefort Pike (Henry Fonda) rejects her upon learning she and her father are con artists. However, he lies and tells Jean that he knew her real identity all along. To get revenge, Jean later poses the fictitious Lady Eve Sidwich and entices Charles into proposing to her.
