the two main paths for melee soldier combat are either parry-stagger, or back-riding. parry-staggering is self explanatory, like any other enemy, except with soldiers you have to circle around to the weak spot during the stagger window.

"back-riding" means jumping on the soldier's back, drawing the 2 forward attacks, and waiting to dismount during the ground slam and attack the butt. fleshrippers are poor parry weapons as they have virtually no block armor, and so they fall into the latter path, back-riding, especially against a starred soldier.

the window of opportunity when dismounting at the stomp allows for 3 weak spot primaries consistently, maybe 4 if you are fast, on very flat ground, and if you get a favorable hit box detection as the soldier starts to turn.

fleshrippers have a short natural primary combo of 1x, 2x, repeat. youll see a few times where i purposely dry fire the primary 1 in the air early to make sure the first landed hit when reaching the ground is the 2x damage primary 2, which means the 3rd hit in a 3-hit sequence is another primary 2. assuming you only land 3 weakspot hits in the window after the ground slam, this results in 2-1-2 (5x total) damage sequence instead of 1-2-1 (4x total), at the cost of the extra stamina to dry fire the primary 1 early. each player can make their own decision as to whether 25% more damage per attack cycle is worth it, at the cost of an extra attack's worth of stamina, and the mental energy/effort needed to time it. i think the stamina is worth it unless you are low, as you should recovery a lot during the next back-riding phase of the cycle.

not the optimal way to kill a soldier, but this same back-riding attack cycle can be repeated indefinitely and would work even against a 2-star. in fact, while back-riding might look like showing off, it can be repeated with any weapon, and is basically the best alternate melee approach if you cannot safely parry a soldier.

one thing to note about all soldier attack strategies is that starred enemies are a bit larger than regular. this is especially important with the soldier, as jumping up to back-ride or circling around to the weakspot during a parry stagger window can feel a little different due to the model being slightly larger. so, dont be surprised if some of your muscle memory feels a little off, and make sure to give yourself enough space and stamina to account for the size difference.
