Setting your DSLR's ISO to 800 is the absolute max. My typical sweet spot for maximum ISO setting is usually somewhere around 650. But in certain circumstances where there’s almost NO lighting what so ever, 800 can be acceptable.
BUT THAT’S IT!
Consider yourself warned. When I first started using DSLR cameras, I didn’t know this little golden rule. And so on one of my first DSLR video projects, I was contracted to shoot at a night club. Since it was naturally dark in there, I thought I’d go ahead and crank up the good ‘ol ISO to 1600…
…HUGE mistake.
When you turn up the ISO to unacceptable levels, the viewfinder on the camera still makes the image appear almost perfect because it’s such a small screen.
It’s not until you review your footage on a computer that you realize your shots are absolutely worthless and you might as well reshoot the entire video.
That’s exactly what happened to me on my first shoot. And I’ll be honest… I had a pretty hard time explaining to my client why their video looked so terribly grainy.
Golden rule: Don’t be that guy. Always stick to ISO under 800.
So Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO… THAT is the exposure triangle:
ISO has noise. Aperture has depth of field. And shutter speed has blur. As stated before, the trick is to master the give and take between these three elements.
For practice, try walking into different lighting environments with your camera in manual mode and guess the settings to see if you can get it right within a few seconds. You’ll be surprised at how quick you start learning how to work these settings.
Alright! Moving beyond the exposure triangle… let’s get a little more in depth with your understanding and customizing your camera settings.
