In this third installment of our series on teaching your dog to walk backwards, we’re focusing on the heel position—shifting the training up a gear! Today, I’ll walk you through how to teach your dog to execute a smooth backwards slide right next to you, maintaining the heel position flawlessly.
We begin by revisiting the fundamentals from our previous sessions, ensuring your dog is adept at following your movements closely. Then, I'll demonstrate how to lead your dog into a backward walk using a precise luring technique. By stepping back first with my opposite leg and then with the leg nearest to my dog, I create a synchronized movement that encourages the dog to stay right by my side.
As we progress, I'll show you how to enhance your dog's understanding and execution of this movement, ensuring they mirror your steps seamlessly. This technique not only improves your dog’s spatial awareness but also solidifies their obedience and alignment in heel position, making every step a testament to their training.
