Process flow charts help us with that understanding. They show the sequence of process steps. Here are some common symbols that we could use on our process map:

Rectangle – activity
Diamond – decision
Ellipse – start/end
Arrow – directional flow
Circle – connector (on-page)
Pentagon – connector (off-page)
Rectangle with Curved Bottom – a document
Rectangle with Interior Vertical Lines – a predefined process
