Mass graves are an all-too-frequent legacy of conflict and human rights abuses. ‘Resolution’ illustrates the lengthy and arduous nature of engagement by family members with the search and investigative processes, including mass grave exhumation, and the significance of having mortal remains returned for dignified commemoration. In doing so, it gives voice to the experiences of family members of the missing, and to humanise the statistical, judicial and forensic facets of mass grave recovery.
Based on extensive research and engagement with survivors, victim organisations, expert practitioners and relevant literature, the film was produced by the authors of the Bournemouth Protocol for the Protection and Investigation of Mass Graves, a set of international standards for the lawful, respectful and effective handling of mass graves and the human remains they contain. It was directed and created by Lina Ghaibeh and George Khoury.
