You get back home all pumped up about the coolest night footage you could ever take, only to discover that all the lights are... FLICKERING like hell!

Scientific definition of flickering: when it looks like you shot the footage in a Disco Club and all lights are going on/off like a strobe.

The secret to avoid flickering is to know that the electric source that goes to lamps is alternate. This means that our lamps go on and off all the time at such high speed that we do not see it, but our cameras can!

For this reason you need to synchronize your shooting framerate and shutter speed to the alternating rate of the lights.

In Europe the rate is 50 Hz, while in US (and other countries) is 60 Hz.

Let's say you want to have slow motion and you set your camera to shot at 60 fps. This will work in US, where the current rate is 60 Hz. However, if you are in Europe (50 Hz) you will be not synced, hence you will have flickering. To make slow motion in Europe without flickering you need to set 50 fps.

For this reason then you will have to synchronize your shutter speed accordingly at 1/100 for 50 fps in Europe (50Hz) or 1/120 for 60 fps in US (60Hz).

Easy! Go out and experiment with the settings and test them yourself!
