Snappy and Snapcraft are fantastic new tools to help developers package applications and help users install them!
Snap packages offer a way to sandbox applications and package all dependencies so that the application doesn't need to rely on the system to provide them.
A common issue across Linux distributions is distributions using different or even custom versions of commonly used system libraries. Sandboxed applications such as Snap and also Flatpaks effectively solve this problem.
Sandboxing applications also helps prevent a malicious application from doing damage to the system because application code cannot be executed outside of the sandbox.
