ABOUT THE FILM
“SPRING THUNDER’ is a film based on mining of the most sought - after rare mineral uranium. A post - script about how, the mining project itself acted as a catalyst that kick-started a chain reaction in a tiny kasba of Bihar (now Jharkhand). ‘Development’ creeped into Daltongunj with the usual promises of a better future to the people, but then the nexus between officials and high caste villagers took over the reins of development into their hands. They had nothing to loose, but the poor farmers had to forego their land. The sleepy kasba of Daltonganj slowly transformed into a town headquarters for uranium mining further up in the forests. The film meticulously unravels various conflicts that was fired in the process and explores its devastating consequences wrought on the lives of the people in an electrifying style on a canvas that grows larger and larger every moment. Uranium is the most powerful source of energy with the most destructive power, as demonstrated through bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and more recently at Fukoshima. But before the collective energy of the masses the power of uranium is reduced to nothing but a myth created by vested interests of the human society. “Spring thunder” is a film that depicts victory of the masses over the most destructive product of greed and power.
ABOUT PRODUCTION/Treatment
The script of the film demanded a remote inaccessible location that itself was a challenge, combined with the scarcity of funds added to the woes of the production team. A decision was taken to shoot in original locations where the story unfolded with available technical support of a small team comprising of twenty five members including the creative team. On the tenth of March 2014 the team assembled at Daltangunj a small town in Jharkhand from different parts of India; from Mumbai, Delhi, Kerala Benarus, Assam and Jharkhand. The scorching heat of summer, the dusty, rugged conditions of the town posed a serious challenge to the crew. Almost near absence of electric supply and lack of a generator crippled the technical team as often batteries could not be charged in time for the shoot. Our schedule was too stretched, we were into the first schedule, the summer schedule, two more schedules were ahead, the monsoon and the winter schedules. Complete shoot extended to fourteen months with very short breaks. Interestingly almost quarter of a million people participated in the shoot as the film was shot in original locations with real crowd. Local people and persons from the administration who supported our film in various ways itself numbered in thousands, without their support shooting was impossible. Sheer guts and dedication of the core production team and extremely supportive cast made production a wonderful experience. But then these are part of making a truly people’s cinema. “Spring Thunder” will go a long way to inspire the young upcoming film makers of India.
