The Original Colin McRae Game starting off the Code Masters Rally Driving series in 1998. This game follows after the release of TOCA Touring Cars in 1997.

The Game is using mixed resolutions and 512 Horizontal res in game so you may want to aspect correct the video to 16:9 to view in 4:3 TV aspect. For 1998, the game looks graphically ok, but nothing special but it was the studios first PlayStation rally game. They soon caught up with Colin McRae 2 in 2000. There's no real car damage in this game but there is some slight deformity when the car gets bashed up. I suspect V-Rally was the games main competitor at the time which is arguably a better game.

I play through Intermediate championship mode and unlock the 4 bonus cars as well as expert mode. The game has one of those crappy endings where it tells you that you did well, but need to go through it again on a harder mode... There wasn't really any more to show so I end the game here. The only difference is that the expert ending lists a few cheat codes. I occasionally show the cockpit view of a race, maybe once per country just to show how it plays and maybe some special effect such as rain, night and wipers.

At the end of each race a passcode is awarded. These were used to submit your times to an online leader board back then. When completing each country, a game (or emu) bug appears playing an awful sound which is perhaps meant to be crowds cheering?
