Today, we explore the life of the Daniel J. Morrell, a freighter whose career spanned some 60 years on North America’s Great Lakes — and whose fate was identical to that of another Great Lakes shipwreck nearly a decade later: the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Unlike the Fitzgerald disaster, however, which killed all 29 crewmen — one crewman DID manage to survive the Morrell, and his story reveals just how terrifying it is when a giant ship suddenly breaks apart in the middle of the night on the Great Lakes.
