Unreported World is riding the waves of change in Senegal where young female surfers are trying to smash traditional stereotypes.
Following Khadjou Sambe the west African country’s first professional female surfer, reporter Minnie Stephenson discovers a group of young women and teenagers fighting to get their surf school recognised. But the predominantly Muslim state takes a culturally conservative view on the role of women, with most expected to focus on domestic duties around the home.
Through Khadjou’s story Stephenson hears about the sacrifices and obstacles placed in front of young women trying to take up a traditionally male sport. Physical intimidation by male surfers, and opposition from their families is common. But will the women succeed?
