Self-harm and self-injurious behavior can look different for each individual, but the reason people engage in these behaviors is to deal with intense emotional pain.
Stephanie Cherestal, Ph.D. offers tips and skills we can practice to reduce the urge to self harm. These practices can include putting one's face in cold water, taking a warm bath, or putting ice against one's face. All these methods have been proven to slow down both our breathing and heart rate and can help us soothe our own body when we're feeling intensely emotional.
