Introduced in 2009, Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton talk about how they use KERS technology.
"Basically when you start braking the rear wheels will generate energy which go through the drive shaft," explains Hamilton, "like a motor which charges up the batteries and then when you exit the corner you get on power which you get to full throttle. You can press a button which releases that energy in to the wheels and gives you extra brake horse power."
"KERS is great," adds Rosberg. "I use it mostly out of the race slow corners and on long straights. That is where it gives me the biggest gain. Of course it is quite limited because I can only push it for six or seven seconds per lap. And if I am fighting with another guy for example. I will not boost until the end when I know it there I will have the biggest straight and there are the best chances to overtake, so I'll wait and I boost just then to get a big run on the guy on front."
