Head of militant group says it would "wage war" with India over Kashmir
(16 Dec 2018) The head of the militant Jamaat-ud-Dawa group said on Sunday that it would "wage war" with India over the disputed region of Kashmir.
Speaking in Lahore during commemorations marking the Bangladeshi independence war against Pakistan on 16 December 1971, Hafiz Saeed told hundreds of supporters that "we will win this war in Kashmir."
The Jamaat-ud-Dawa is widely believed to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant group that Saeed co-founded and was blamed for the 2008 deadly attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people.
The United States has offered a 10 million US dollar bounty for Saeed.
Seven civilians and four combatants were killed on Saturday during chaotic protests and fighting in the disputed Indian-administered Kashmir region.
Separatists who challenge India's sovereignty over Kashmir said the killings were part of India's state policy and called for three days of mourning and a general shutdown in Kashmir.
Supporters in Sunday's rally chanted "we are ready for Jihad" and a Jamaat-ud-Dawa group leader said it would "unite Pakistan against India" and "wage Jihad against India."
India and Pakistan each administer part of Kashmir, but both claim it in its entirety.
Rebels have been fighting Indian control since 1989.
Kashmiris deeply resent Indian rule and support rebel cause that the territory be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.
