The 'cinematic soul of Coburg', otherwise known as Surprise Chef, recently visited the Live at Enmore studios. They brought with them a brand new track called 'Talent Stick'.
The band create instrumental music that's based on groove, chiselled tones, with a decidedly vintage production aesthetic (think The Meters, Mulatu Astatke, and Adrian Younge). There's ample space for meditation among the layers of Surprise Chef's sound and it's a style that's seen them invited on many stages around Australia.
In their Live at Enmore session, the band dished up a minimal masterpiece — a colourful musical conversation between its constituent elements.
For this performance of 'Talent Stick', the band featured Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on the Fender Rhodes, with Carl Lindeberg and Andrew Congues holding down the groove on bass and drums respectively.
Here's what Stuckey had to say about 'Talent Stick' before recording:
"With a lot of Surprise Chef's stuff, the tune gets written and the meaning of the tune comes later... for the most part, the listener can derive whatever feeling is appropriate out of the tunes."
