This video is about the introduction to the Domain Name System (DNS) and what are the levels of DNS:
DNS performs name resolution from Name to IP and IP to Name.
Microsoft DNS
The first DNS system was Bind (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) and was created back in the 1980's.
It is still very much in use today and Microsoft Windows DNS is fully compatible with Bind.
It is possible to run a Microsoft network using Bind or another alternative DNS system, however this is harder to integrate with Active Directory than if you were using Microsoft DNS. This is because Microsoft DNS uses dynamic secure updates when using Active Directory Integrated zones. Clients and Domain Controllers can update their DNS records on the DNS server. Without a dynamic update system like this, the DNS records would need to be updated manually. UNIX based DNS does support dynamic updates however this will not be secure like if you were using Windows DNS.
The DNS hierarchy is comprised of the following elements:
1. Root Level.
2. Top Level Domains.
3. Second Level Domains.
4. Sub-Domain.
5. Host.
A top-level domain (TLD) is the rightmost segment of a domain name, located after the last dot. Also known as domain extensions.
TLDs serve to recognize certain elements of a website, such as its purpose, owner or geographical area. For example, a .edu top-level domain allows users to immediately identify that site as a higher educational institution.
The concept of TLDs was created by ARPANET in the 1960s with the goal of easing the process of memorizing IP addresses.
Each top-level domain has an independent registry managed by a designated organization under the guidance of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD)
.com - for commercial sites.
.org - for organizations.
.net - for networks.
.info - for information platforms.
.biz - for businesses.
