With the recent advancement of AI technologies, many traditional tools have been enhanced to improve the quality of life for people with different impairments. One such field is technology for the visually impaired, where current solutions focus more on navigation and less on helping the visually impaired to understand their environment. Percevo is an AI-powered smart cane that gives users an audio description of their environment in real-time. This enables the visually impaired to perceive their surroundings to a fuller extent. Percevo detects and recognizes objects using a camera and AI algorithms with an acceptable accuracy rate. It also estimates the distance of an approaching object using an ultrasonic sensor. It further extends the usability of cane to users with hearing impairments using vibration sensors. Hence, it's a compact smart mobility solution for people with disabilities that gives them a better understanding of their surroundings. This solution can be used by many users with vision, hearing, and mobility disabilities. Therefore, this can be extended to elderly people with similar disabilities. Currently, the solution works in indoor environments with testing data sets. However, we would like to expand it with suitable AI algorithms for indoor and outdoor environments and test it with real-time, case-based data sets. In the future, we plan to enhance the final product with durable materials and design to meet the standard market needs.
