Select the layer you want to duplicate and press CTRL/CMD + D
You can also duplicate multiple assets. Just shift click to select multiple layers and copy with this shortcuts.
To use the menu command to to 'Edit - Duplicate' This also works in the Projekt panel.
However, this doesn't duplicate nested compositions! In order to do that use the plug-in 'True Comp Duplicator'. It does exactly what it says.
With that you can duplicate compositions and all nested compositions in one go. Be careful though, when you have many levels of nesting, you can crash After Effects easily. Happened to me multiple times ;)
