Gruinard Island in Scotland was the site of biological warfare testing in WW2. The British government sprayed the island with vast quantities of deadly anthrax bacterium. Killing all the island's inhabitants, hundreds of sheep. The island lay quarantined until the 1980s, when the government tried to decontaminate it by spraying it with tonnes of toxic formaldehyde.
