David Chaum was a Berkeley graduate in 1982 when he picked a fight against NSA, creating international cryptographic association. During that time he also researched a bunch of privacy-enhancing tools and put a first paper out drafting the ideas behind electronic money.
He made it a thing in 1994 when the first ecash transaction was made by him in Switzerland. He owned Digicash company and almost sold ecash to Microsoft. He wasn't a very successful businessman compared to other people in his circles.
Now he works on the XXnetwork and Elixxir messenger app.
