Understanding the mechanics of swimming for microorganisms is a broad, yet important field of research, which could lead to bright applications such as microrobots fabrication or targeted drug delivery. In this field, both bacteria and Janus particles are used as model microswimmers, and their motion in various experimental conditions is widely analyzed.
In this video, Thomas explains us what Janus particles are, why they are expected to behave in a similar way to bacteria when brought next to round obstacles, and how the actual experiments conducted can surprise us.

Thomas Dartige is a student in the Cell Physics Master at the University of Strasbourg, France.
