Grand Sumo - Ring Entering Ceremony, Tokyo, January 2019
The ring entering ceremony precedes the top division, makinuuchi, each day of the tournament. The top rikishi wear a special, and rather expensive, hand made kesho-mawashi, of their own design and choosing, and perform a short series or ritual gestures that are meant to obtain the attention of the gods and signify that the wrestlers will fight with integrity and a good fighting spirit.
This was the first time that we sat in the lower arena, and I was glad to see one of my favorite rikishi, Tochinoshin, the giant Georgian, participate as an ozeki, the second highest rank in sumo. He has since retired. Sumo is a rough sport!
