Kong-rey has strengthened into a typhoon. The Central Weather Administration has issued a sea warning and says that the storm is only continuing to grow. It is expected to hit Taiwan at its peak size, which could have a radius of 300km. It is highly likely that the storm will cover the entire island. Let’s hear from a forecaster.
Chu Mei-lin
Central Weather Administration
At about 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the storm will be located in waters to the northwest of the Philippines. The storm will be closest to us on Thursday and into the early hours of Friday. That’s when its effects will be most pronounced. Rains will be prolonged and intense in Yilan and Hualien. The eastern half of the island could see extremely heavy rains.
Cho Jung-tai
Premier
The decision of whether to suspend work and class lies with local governments. But one key issue is the time that the local governments are provided information, so that they can make the right call for when the storm is closest.
Cheng Jia-ping
Central Weather Administration
We only launched a trial method for wind forecasting in coastal areas this year, so it will take some time before it is fully operational. If the heads of local governments require additional information, they could postpone their decision a little, until an update is announced at 9 p.m.
Moving forward, New Taipei says it will make its decisions on work and school cancelations whenever the central government sees fit. Meanwhile, Taipei says it will make its announcements at 8 p.m. as before. Taitung says it is open to any options.
