There are plenty of Western medicines in any refugee camp marketplace, but most refugees have no idea which ones to buy and can’t read labels, so they usually go see Victor, the self-taught camp “pharmacist”.
He treats everything from diarrhea to serious infections and his waiting room is always packed. He sees almost 200 patients a day.
Unlike the butcher or the bleeder, Victor knows his limits. And he takes the time to explain the proper dosage to each and every patient, even if the diagnosis isn’t always right.
Victor has a lot of clients because he is trusted by the community - though it doesn’t hurt that he’s willing to give out prescription medications to anyone who asks. He even built his clinic with the boxes that he bought them in. He imports them from nearby Abeche town and makes a tidy profit reselling to his clients.
By Muslim standards, Victor is a very successful man.
