STEP by STEP Guide
I’m logged into Google and in my Gmail inbox.
If I click on one of the emails in my inbox,
You’ll see it’s a long thread of back and forth emails between my friend and I. If an email conversation contains more than a few messages. Gmail will automatically hide the emails in the middle of the conversation, only showing the first and latest email messages, to make it easy to read.
1 - To display all of the emails sent in this thread, I’ll move my mouse to the small icon that shows the number of hidden emails
2 - As I move my mouse over it, that icon changes and if I click on it once, the hidden emails are shown. If I click out of that email however and then back into it, you’ll see that the emails are hidden again. This feature can’t be turned off unfortunately.
3 - You can choose to switch off the conversation thread view. Let me show you how to quickly turn this off in the Quick Settings section of Gmail. To do that, I’ll move my mouse to the top right of the Gmail inbox
4 - You’ll see there are a number of icons shown here but the one I am interested in is the cog or gear icon for the settings section. Let’s click on that
5 - A panel then opens that shows some of the more common settings changes you can make in Gmail. I’m going to scroll down to the very bottom of this panel
6 - And there is a section there called Email threading. The conversation view is currently switched on, indicated by the tick in this box.
7 - To turn this off, all I need to do is click into the checkbox to remove that tick.
8 - A message then pops up confirming that Gmail will need to reload to show emails separately. This just means Gmail will restart. None of your emails will be lost when this happens.
9 - If you want to turn email threading on again at any time, just click on the checkbox you just unticked to do that
10 - I’ll now click on the large blue Reload button to restart Gmail.
11 - Once Gmail reloads, we’re returned to our inbox. And you’ll see that all the emails from that conversation are now shown separately.
