Classic silent movie stars like Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow helped popularize the downturned eyes makeup look. The effect is to achieve a sad or melancholy look.

0:13 • Foundation: Apply a thick layer of matte foundation in a pale shade all over your face.

0:50 • Brows: Using a black pencil, draw a straight line creating the effect of a “sad eyebrow” tending downward at the outer corner of the eye. Blend the pencil using an angled brush.

1.44 • Eyes: Using a black pencil, draw a line along the upper lashes. Use your finger to blend the line for a soft, dramatic look. Add pencil along the upper contour of the eye for emphasis. Draw the outline of the lower eyelid with a black pencil and blend the line using an angled brush.

2:25 • Eyeshadow: Apply blue shimmer shadows to the entire eyelid using your finger and blend the edges with a brush. Apply taupe shadow into the crease of the eyelid, up to the brow bone and along the lower lash line.

3:26 • Powder: Apply white powder under your eyes and around your nose.

3:42 • Mascara. Apply two coats of black mascara to your upper and lower lashes.

4:16 • Blush. Apply two layers of berry cream blush to the center of your cheeks using your fingers and a sponge.

4:49 • Lips. Tint your lips with foundation, removing natural contours.

Using berry-coloured lipstick, draw a cupids bow lip

Apply a second layer of lipstick.

A brief history of the 1920s makeup look.

In the 1920s, the increasing use of makeup was a symbol of rebellion and liberation of women. The makeup style, characterized by its distinctive cupid's bow lips and down-turned eye makeup ( sad eyes) was influenced by the silent Hollywood film era.
Actresses like Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, and Joan Crawford embraced the flapper aesthetic. Featuring bold, dark eye makeup, emphasizing the eyes with kohl liner and mascara. The eyes were often accentuated with a downward slanting shape, which Irina shows you how to achieve in this tutorial. The flapper look was that of a demure but perpetually melancholic girl. Again the influence of the drama of the silent movies.

Red lips were another focal point of the flapper look, with a distinct Cupid's bow shape achieved through the use of lip liners and lipsticks. In deep, rich shades like plum, burgundy, or red. This exaggerated lip shape was often emphasized with the application of dark lipstick to create a bow-like appearance.

Makeup artists of the time, such as Max Factor and Helena Rubinstein, played a crucial role in popularizing these trends. Their new cosmetics products and techniques specifically tailored to the demands of the burgeoning film industry.
Through their work with Hollywood stars and the widespread dissemination of their techniques through magazines and beauty guides, these makeup artists helped to cement the flapper makeup look as a symbol of modernity and glamour during the 1920s.
Hollywood's influence on fashion and beauty during this period was profound, and the flapper makeup style became an enduring icon of the Roaring Twenties.
