Get an inside look at the most awaited 2024 games for Deshaun Watson and the Browns on the Ultimate Browns Show. Stay updated with the latest Cleveland Browns news and analysis on UCSS Today! The Browns must not only get their game faces on for the Cowboys in Week 1, they better gear up to finish the 2024 season with a bang and be ready for prime time in their home stretch.
The Browns, who have the toughest schedule in the NFL based on last season’s win totals, have a brutal finish to the season, with four AFC North foes in their last seven games, and a visit from the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15. What’s more, all four of their prime-time games come in that grueling stretch, meaning they better have more key players left standing at the end than they did last season, when they finished 11-6 and lost 45-14 to the Texans in the wild card round.
In that daunting final stretch, they host the Steelers in Week 12, visit the Broncos for a Monday night game in Week 13, host the Steelers in Week 14, host the Chiefs in Week 15, visit the Bengals in Week 16, host the Dolphins in Week 17, and visit the Ravens in Week 18. Their last five opponents all won at least nine games in 2023, with three winning 11 or more, and four making the playoffs.
“To end the season, as we really have division games every other week it seems like closing out the season, finishing down in Baltimore, we know how good a football team that is,” coach Kevin Stefanski said in a press release by the team. “And the players and coaches, we understand that challenge that it presents, but excited for it.”
The other prime-time games in that furious finish are the Steelers on Thursday night here in Week 12, at the Bengals on Thursday night in Week 16 (both on Prime Video), and the Dolphins at home on Sunday Night Football in Week 17, with that game subject to change.
The Browns have five nationally televised or streamed games overall, including the 4:25 p.m. opener against the Cowboys Sept. 8, which Fox is billing as “America’s Game of the Week.” The game marks Tom Brady’s debut as Fox’s lead analyst.
The Browns are only 3-21-1 in openers since 1999, but they’ve won two straight under Stefanski, over the Panthers and Bengals. The Cowboys, who went 12-5 last season and also lost in the wild card round, beat the Giants, 40-0, in their opener last season.
“I love that we’re starting at home like we did last year,” Stefanski said. “Our home crowd was absolutely electric, and I would expect it to be no different for the Cowboys coming to town. They’re a great team. Obviously won their division last season. I think Coach (Mike) McCarthy does an outstanding job. So, we’ll have a great challenge coming out of the gates.”
The Browns have a weird stretch early where they play three straight road games for the first time since 2011— against the Raiders, Commanders and Eagles in Weeks 4-6— followed by three straight home games against the Bengals, Ravens and Chargers.
“That’s quite the homestand following three really good road opponents,” Stefanski said. “So, it’ll certainly be different for our guys, but something that we’re looking forward to.”
The AFC North slate kicks off in Weeks 7 and 8 with the Bengals and AFC North defending champion Ravens back to back, followed by the Steelers three weeks later. By then, the Browns will have a good idea of where they stand in arguably the best division in football.
“Those division games are always so important,” Stefanski said. “You always immediately when the schedule comes out find where they are on there. We’ve had years where it was all division early. Now, it’s a little bit later when you’re getting into the division games, starting in later October. So that’s a unique part of this as well. But you definitely want to find those division games in the calendar immediately.”
While the Ravens and Bengals get the Chiefs in Week 1 and 2, respectively, the Browns have to wait until Week 15 to face the Chiefs, whom they lost to in the wild card round in 2020, and again in the opener in Kansas City in 2021. With Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce coming to town, possibly with his girlfriend Taylor Swift, it promises to be a power-packed afternoon.
