Schumann wrote: "The thread running through my Papillons will not be easy to follow unless the performer realizes that the pieces were born from reading the book." In the masked ball scene, three figures come into play: Walt and Vult swap masks to seduce the betrothed Wina. These two characters hint at Florestan and Eusebius, who consistently appear throughout Schumann's compositions. The Papillons were composed between 1829 and 1831, with some parts written in Heidelberg and others in Leipzig. This piece is not program music and does not aim to represent insect life. Instead, it embodies a deeply Romantic theme, through which the composer conveys the duality within humans, their struggle with self-understanding, and their fear of the Doppelganger, or their own "ghost", or, using Carl Jung's terminology, a "shadow".
