The Kingsman movie isn’t just an off-the-wall adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kingsman comic The Secret Service, it’s a spot-on tribute to the legacy of James Bond movies. They’re more than just spy movie or a James Bond ripoff, but Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle are very aware of their inspiration. From the slick James Bond fashion to the crazy James Bond gadgets and absurdly specific James Bond drink recipes, everything about the Kingsman is a loving tribute to 007 spy movies. In light of the Kingsman 2 movie, we took a look at some of our other favorite movies that could be seen as a James Bond rip off, starting with Operation: Kid Brother.
Also known as Operation Double 007 and O.K. Connery, this movie stars the little brother of the original James Bond, Sean Connery. The producers didn’t care that Neil Connery had no acting experience whatsoever, he looked the part and had the same great Sean Connery accent. Not that it mattered, because they dubbed over him anyway. Still, there were some real cast members from the 007 movies, like the original M Bernard Lee and of course Moneypenny: Lois Maxwell. It’s just one of many “spaghetti spy” movies that came out in the wake of Dr. No’s success as the first James Bond 007 movie, but it’s the perfect example of how everyone wanted a piece of the James Bond action.
Our next Bond without Bond is actually officially licensed, unlike the rest of these James Bond knockoffs. James Bond Jr. was a kids cartoon from 1991 that starred the nephew of James Bond 007, James Bond Jr. The real James Bond never appears in the show, but there are plenty of James Bond villains from the James Bond movies, including Jaws, Goldfinger, Dr. No, Oddjob and more. If James Bond Jr. is too kiddy of a James Bond parody for you, we’ve got the incredible Never Too Young To Die. Starring John Stamos as Lance Stargrove, the son of secret agent Drew Stargrove, played by one-time Bond George Lazenby. Everything about this cheesy ‘80s Bond ripoff is absolutely hilarious, from the awful theme song to the ludicrous Bond villain played by Gene Simmons in drag, everything about this movie is a shameless ripoff of the James Bond 007 series.
Finally, we’ve moved into the realm of James Bond spoof, James Bond parody, James Bond satire, and any other word you can think of. We start with Get Smart, since before it was a huge Get Smart movie with Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and The Rock, Get Smart was a cult classic ‘60s TV show created by Mel Brooks. From there, we leap forward to the Leslie Nielsen less-than-classic Spy Hard. This James Bond tribute is still pretty funny, but its lasting legacy is the incredibly Spy Hard Theme by Weird Al Yankovic. As great as Spy Hard was, it was surpassed as a Bond parody in every way by the next year’s Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. The first Austin Powers movie is a classic to this day, and Mike Myers’ legendary characters like Dr. Evil have become part of pop culture. The sequels, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers: Goldmember don’t hold up as well, but they’re still some of the funniest 007 parodies in existence. With the upcoming release of Kingsman 2 The Golden Circle, it looks like there’s no end in sight for James Bond parody movies, James Bond tributes, James Bond homages, and James Bond in general.
