Allosteric Enzymes - Mechanism, Regulation, Models and Classification

Enzymes that has additional site other than the active site (allosteric site) for allosteric ligand binding.
The allosteric ligands are also known as effector molecules.
Binding of the effector will bring about conformational change in the active site, altering its catalytic or binding properties.
The effector can be either inhibitor or activator.
Activator enhances the enzyme activity after binding, whereas Inhibitor decreases the enzyme activity after binding.
Allosteric Enzymes are multi subunit enzymes and they exists in 2 conformational forms:
1. T state (Tensed State) – Low activity, Low affinity state
2. R State (Relaxed State) – High activity, High affinity state
