ABCD Parameters are also known as Transmission Parameters (T Parameters), Cascade Parameters or Chain Parameters.
Multiplying Individual ABCD Matrices to Find the Total Cascade ABCD Matrix.
The Z, Y, and S parameter representations can be utilized to characterize a microwave network with an arbitrary number of ports. However, in practice, many microwave networks are composed of a cascade connection of two or more two-port networks. In such cases, it is convenient to define a 2 × 2 transmission matrix, also known as the ABCD matrix, for each two-port network.
ABCD matrix of the cascade connection of two-port networks can be easily found by multiplying the ABCD matrices of the individual two-ports.
The two-port model of the ABCD Parameters takes input current I1 at port 1, with an input voltage equal to V1. The output voltage and current are V2 and I2, respectively. The current directions are taken so that I1 is entering and I2 is leaving the two-port network. Among the four electrical quantities, V1 and I1 are the dependent variables. The voltage V1 and current I1 are represented mathematically in terms of independent variables V2 and I2 as follows:
The ABCD matrix is defined for a two-port network in terms of the total voltages and currents.
