Welcome back to another 1 min documentary. In this video we will take a look at the Cannon Beach Cannon.
The USS Shark, a naval schooner, wrecked at the mouth of the Colombia River in 1846. The ship began to break apart and pieces of the wreckage were scattered all over the bar. Several cannons were part of the wreckage.
In 1891 James P Austin established the first post office at Arch Cape and named the area Cannon Beach which reflected his hopes of finding one of the cannons.
In 1898 mail carrier George Luce spotted the cannon in the waters of Arch Cape Creek. Using a team of horses, the cannon was pulled from the water.
Today you can see the original cannon in the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum. A replica
Cannon sits as an historical marker on the west side of hiway 101 just north of Cannon Beach.
