By the 13th century, the Mongol Empire was growing at a seemingly unstoppable pace, conquering everything in its sight and creating one of the largest empires that the world has ever seen. Soon, Kublai Khan, one of the most important leaders of this massive empire, had his sights set firmly on the comparatively tiny Japanese islands.
What followed were two invasions, which according to countless Japanese sources at the time were not decided merely by violence and bloodshed. Instead, it was claimed that the Mongol invasions of Japan were decided by none other than the gods themselves, simultaneously giving birth to a term that would become infamous around the globe almost 700 years later: KAMIKAZE.
Today, we take a look at Japan during the lead-up to the invasions, the invasions themselves AND how they were ACTUALLY decided.
This is the story of the Mongol invasions of Japan!
