Medical Spanish–meaning both a knowledge of the appropriate linguistic registers and of the various Hispanic/Latinx cultural values towards health, medicine and healing–is a tool that we can use to break down barriers in communication, while also ensuring higher quality and more efficient and compassionate care. Medical Spanish, in this sense, is an essential tool for those interested in building a career in healthcare professions or in translation, for Spanish majors or simply for those students looking to improve their intercultural communication skills in general. For heritage speakers, this type of knowledge is also one that can help us to serve as more effective advocates for our loved ones in a predominantly English-dominant setting.
Accordingly, in this course, we will learn about and practice various modes of Medical Spanish communication (from simple introductions and bedside chatter with patients, to more advanced medical documentation); we will learn and discuss various cultural case studies pertaining to the fields of health and healing in the Spanish-speaking world; all the while, taking part in various experiential and collaborative learning opportunities, structured around discipline-specific mock-scenarios in the context of emergency medicine, the clinical setting, nutrition, dentistry, alternative medicine, yoga and more.
